Road trip and holiday questions for kids
Long drives, slow mornings and lazy afternoons. The holidays are full of time to talk. Here are questions to fill it, from silly to sentimental.

The holidays change the rhythm of family life. No school run, no rushing out of the door and often a long drive somewhere. For many families, it’s the most time together all year.
It’s good time for conversation. Here’s how to use it, and a set of questions to take with you.
On the road
Long drives are perfect for questions. Nobody has anywhere else to be, and there’s no need for eye contact. (We’ve written more about this in Why kids talk more in the car.)
A few ideas:
- Take turns. Pass the phone round the passengers, with each person reading out a question for everyone to answer.
- Include the driver. Use Siri so the driver can play too. Say “Ask Tuko for a Wacky question” and Siri will read one out.
- Go silly first. Wacky questions are great for the first hour, when everyone’s still fresh.
- Leave quiet stretches. Nobody has to talk the whole way.
On slow days
Holiday mornings and lazy afternoons are good for deeper chats. Try a question over breakfast, on a walk or while you’re waiting for food at a café.
And at the end of the break, ask what everyone will remember. It’s a good way to look back on the trip together.

Silly ones for the car
- If our family car turned into a submarine at night where would you want to go?
- If our house grew legs and walked, where would you want it to take us?
- If rainbows were actually massive slides where would they take you?
- What would happen if gravity took the day off?
- If clouds were made of jelly, which flavour would you want to taste?
Would you rather
- Would you rather eat your favourite food daily or try something new every day?
- Would you rather see things that are very far away or things that are very tiny?
- Would you rather know everything about one subject or know a little about every subject?
About holidays
- What is your favourite holiday memory?
- What do you enjoy about holidays?
- If we could go anywhere for a family holiday, where would you want to go?
- What is a new family tradition you would like to start?
To look back on
- Has there been a moment from this week that you will remember for a long time?
- What have we done this week that you would like to do more often?
Your turn
Before your next trip, pick three questions: one silly, one would you rather and one to look back on. Save them in Tuko, or say “Bookmark this question in Tuko” when you find a good one.

Common questions
What are good road trip questions for kids?
Start with silly hypotheticals and would you rather questions, then move to questions about holidays and family memories once everyone’s settled in.
How do I keep kids entertained on a long drive without screens?
Questions everyone answers in turn, including the adults, can fill a surprising amount of time. Mix silly ones with a few deeper ones.
Can the driver play too?
Yes. With Siri, the driver can ask Tuko for a question and hear it read out, without touching the phone, so they can keep their eyes on the road.
